Steam Survey Puts Linux at 5.33%, Overtaking macOS as Windows Slips

A reporting shift in Valve's survey likely explains much of the spike.

Overview

  • Valve's March 2026 Steam Hardware Survey reports Linux at 5.33% of Steam users, above macOS at about 2.35% with Windows at 92.33%.
  • A sharp drop in Simplified Chinese usage by 31.85% alongside a 16.82% rise in English points to a language and region data correction that can shift OS shares.
  • PCWorld also spotted a new Linux line labeled “0 64 bit” that suddenly took about 17.6% of Linux users, a clue the spike may reflect reclassification or a glitch.
  • SteamOS, which powers the Steam Deck handheld, accounts for roughly one quarter of Linux users on Steam in the March report.
  • Reporters urge caution because the survey samples only part of Steam's base and past entries have shown anomalies such as last month's short-lived RTX 5070 surge.
