The watchdog has opened an early-stage inquiry into what happened at the Etruria custody unit.

Overview

  • The man, in his 40s, was arrested in Stoke-on-Trent shortly after 5:30 pm on March 17 and taken to the Northern Area Custody Facility in Etruria.
  • His condition worsened in custody, staff called West Midlands Ambulance Service, and he was pronounced dead at about 8:20 pm.
  • Staffordshire Police said they made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and will not comment further during the inquiry.
  • The watchdog, which oversees complaints against police in England and Wales, sent investigators to the site and said its enquiries are at an early stage.
  • Authorities have not released the man’s name, which often reflects notifying family and confirming key facts before public disclosure.
