St. Paul Officer Identified After Shooting Near Regions Hospital

The BCA says the officer fired after the suspect produced a gunlike object and will forward its investigation to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office for review.

Overview

  • The shooting took place Monday, Aug. 10, after officers answered a domestic-assault call and located a suspect near 12th Street by Regions Hospital who ran from officers and then pulled an object that appeared to be a handgun.
  • The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension identified the officer as Jacob Pederson, a 12-year St. Paul police veteran who fired his department-issued weapon and has been placed on critical-incident leave.
  • The person shot was identified as 21-year-old Tayshawn Brown-Roberts, who was taken to Regions Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
  • BCA crime-scene teams recovered a Glock-style replica BB gun at the scene and secured squad-car and body-worn camera video that investigators say will be reviewed as part of the probe.
  • The BCA is conducting an independent use-of-force investigation and will send its findings to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office for potential charging, a step that will determine legal outcomes and inform any department actions.
