Srinagar Anti-Corruption Court Jails Ex-Tehsildar for 2010 Bribe

The ruling caps a 2010 trap case pursued by the erstwhile Vigilance Organisation, now the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

Overview

  • The Special Anti-Corruption Court in Srinagar, which delivered its verdict Monday, sentenced Mohammad Akram Khan to one year of simple imprisonment and a Rs 20,000 fine.
  • Special Judge Dr. Tasleem Arief Ganie convicted the former Chadoora tehsildar, a local revenue officer, under Sections 5(2) read with 5(1)(d) of the J&K Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 161 of the Ranbir Penal Code.
  • The case began with a May 13, 2010 complaint, after which Vigilance Organisation Kashmir laid a trap and caught Khan taking Rs 20,000, with tainted cash recovered from under a pillow and supported by hand-wash and pillow-wash tests.
  • Investigators filed a chargesheet on October 22, 2010, and the court’s March 23, 2026 judgment followed a long trial in which the judge noted Khan’s age, retirement, and the years under trial before fixing a one-year term and fine, with one extra month if the fine is unpaid.
  • The Anti-Corruption Bureau called the conviction a milestone for accountability in public service, highlighting both active graft enforcement and the slow pace typical of corruption cases.
