Square Enix Details Evercold Expansion, Reveals New Tank Job and FFVII Raid

The Berlin Fan Fest announcements expand FFXIV onto Nintendo Switch 2 and introduce gameplay systems that aim to change how players progress and balance content.

Overview

  • Square Enix used the Berlin Fan Fest on Saturday to confirm Patch 8.0, Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, will arrive in January 2027 and that the expansion will include two new jobs with the first revealed now and the second held for Tokyo Fan Fest.
  • The first new job, Bastion, is a main tank that wields twin Skyltborg greatshields which double as defensive tools and cannon-like artillery and will require the game’s new Evolved combat mode and level 90 to start.
  • Everwold will host an eight-player Final Fantasy VII Remake crossover raid series called Beyond the Lifestream with three tiers and Normal, a new mid difficulty, and Savage modes, and its story and art are being developed with original FFVII staff overseeing narrative and design.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 will get Final Fantasy XIV on August 4, 2026 with a separate monthly subscription that offers existing subscribers a 50 percent discount and an approx one-month free subscription window to ease server load at launch.
  • Square Enix announced system modernizations including branching main‑scenario quest order, an auto content balancing feature to scale enemies to players, and Character Action Skins while warning some features are still in development; PlayStation 4 support is planned to continue only until roughly Patch 8.3 and Lucky Bancho’s public data estimates active players have risen to about 1.02 million.
