Overview
- A group of Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco, known as the “Spurs Nuns,” attended Games 1 and 2 of the NBA Finals in early June and were seen praying with and greeting players including Victor Wembanyama and Luke Kornet.
- The sisters’ visible fandom grew from a personal, two-decade relationship with the Spurs and coach Gregg Popovich that began with letters and visits and now frames their public presence at games.
- Spurs Impact and local donors have provided material support for the sisters’ work, including 30 Game 1 tickets to share with families, suite access from a car dealer, custom shoes from San Antonio Shoemakers, and 200 zoo admissions.
- The sisters are directing donated tickets, gifts, and services to students and families served by St. John Bosco School and say the publicity should highlight and sustain their ministry rather than make them a spectacle.
- The Salesian Sisters are part of a large global congregation focused on youth ministry, and the recent attention has raised immediate funds and awareness that could help keep their struggling West Side school open and widen community support.
