Spotify Launches Reserved Ticket Holds for Superfans

Spotify positions Reserved as a reward for top listeners, designed to deter scalpers, boost Premium value.

Overview

  • Spotify launched Reserved in the U.S. on Thursday to hold up to two tickets for each eligible Premium subscriber before a general sale so identified superfans get first access.
  • Eligibility is based on activity signals such as streams, saves, shares and location and Spotify says it will monitor for bots or gaming of the system.
  • When a user’s Reserved window opens they have roughly a day to buy up to two tickets and are sent to Ticketmaster to complete checkout after connecting accounts if prompted.
  • The rollout works only at Live Nation venues and uses Ticketmaster inventory at launch with Role Model named as the first artist partner and notifications scheduled to start for fans on June 23.
  • The move aims to give more fans real access to tickets while increasing app engagement for paid users but ties Spotify into the dominant Live Nation/Ticketmaster system that has faced legal scrutiny over market power.
