Spirited Away Stage Production to Make North American Premiere in Toronto

The Japanese-language spectacle’s scale and prior sell-out runs make the costly international tour a commercially driven effort that demands extensive logistics.

Overview

  • Mirvish confirmed Monday that it will present the North American premiere at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre for a 15-week run from May 6 to Aug. 15, 2027.
  • The production will be performed in Japanese with English surtitles by a company of roughly 50 performers and will travel to multiple international venues.
  • Toho has announced a 2026–2028 world tour opening in Taipei in December 2026, followed by a Japan national tour beginning in Tokyo, stops in Toronto and Los Angeles in 2027, and a return to London’s Coliseum in spring 2028.
  • The staging is large and technically complex, featuring a live orchestra playing Joe Hisaishi’s score, set design by Jon Bausor, puppetry by Toby Olié, and costumes by Sachiko Nakahara, with John Caird credited as director and co-adapter.
  • Casting has not been announced and Mirvish says Toronto tickets will go on sale in October 2026, with presenters stressing that the production’s scale requires translators, a substantial crew and proven box-office appeal to justify the costs.
