Spike in Road Deaths and Attacks on Transport Workers Hit Argentina and Peru

Specialists say rising motorcycle fatalities plus recent shootings of bus and combi drivers show gaps in road safety, enforcement and worker protection now under judicial review.

Overview

  • Road deaths in Santa Fe have risen to 26 so far in 2026 compared with 22 in all of 2025, with motorcycles accounting for more than 80% of victims and a growing fleet that now represents about 38% of vehicles.
  • A series of recent crashes in Argentina has deepened concern, including a frontal collision on Route 94 near Teodelina that killed all four occupants of the two vehicles involved and other fatal motorcycle collisions now under pericial and judicial investigation.
  • A 26-year-old motorcyclist, Mariana Lourdes Ibáñez, was fatally struck in a hit-and-run; the driver was later detained and an alcohol test registered 1.58 g/l, and prosecutors are pursuing charges in that case.
  • In Peru, a driver for Etupsa (Line 73) was shot dead after reported extortion threats and a combi in Callao was fired on, leaving the driver and a two-year-old passenger wounded as police investigate links to extortion networks.
  • Authorities and organizations have opened criminal and disciplinary inquiries, the AFA will review a stadium projectile that hit a goalkeeper and specialists are calling for stronger enforcement, education and protection measures to reduce human-error crashes and attacks on transport staff.
