Spectator Charged After Brawl Disrupts John Marshall Graduation at VCU

Detectives are reviewing security footage to identify other participants for possible charges.

Overview

  • A member of the audience rushed the stage and attacked a graduating student during John Marshall High School’s ceremony at VCU’s Siegel Center, touching off a multi-person brawl on Wednesday.
  • More than 50 officers from VCU Police and Richmond Police responded, detained multiple people at the scene, dispersed subsequent outside altercations, and reported no injuries or weapons.
  • VCU Police charged 20-year-old Evan J. Williams Jr. with disorderly conduct and damage to private property and said detectives are exploring additional charges.
  • School and city officials have ordered stepped-up security for remaining ceremonies, enforced magnetometers and clear-bag rules, and asked the public to submit tips and video to help investigators.
  • Officials emphasized protecting the graduates’ celebration — the class earned a 100% graduation rate and the day also honored a student who died earlier this year — while warning of stricter policing at future events.
