Special CBI Court Upholds Summons Against Mehul Choksi in ₹55 Crore Bank Loan Case

The judge ruled that the magistrate correctly took cognizance of the CBI chargesheet in April 2025.

Overview

  • Special CBI Judge J P Darekar on February 2 rejected revision pleas by Mehul Choksi and two ex-Gitanjali executives, with the order made public on Friday.
  • The magistrate had on April 17, 2025 taken cognizance of the chargesheet and issued notices to seven accused, including Vipul Chitalia and Aniyath Nair.
  • Investigators allege Canara Bank and Bank of Maharashtra sanctioned ₹30 crore and ₹25 crore to Bezel Jewellery that were diverted, causing a ₹55.27 crore loss.
  • The defence argued the summons were issued at “lightning speed” without a reasoned order, but the court held the magistrate had reviewed the record and acted properly.
  • The CBI said the challenge sought to delay extradition; Choksi remains detained in Belgium and trials against co-accused in the CBI and ED cases have not begun.
