Speaker Seeks Government Statement on Shaktipeeth Expressway Land Acquisition After Opposition Protest

Vijay Wadettiwar says police-led land measurement during unseasonal crop losses is worsening farmers’ hardship.

Overview

  • In the Maharashtra Assembly, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar moved an adjournment notice accusing the government of forcible land acquisition and citing deployment of about 1,000 police personnel for measurements in Sahajpur-Jawla, Parbhani.
  • The Speaker noted the issue and directed the government to present its position in the House.
  • A day earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Jadhav led farmer protests in Parbhani and parts of Beed, pledging to continue until the plan is withdrawn.
  • Jadhav alleged inadequate compensation, night-time arrests and assaults during land measurement, and claimed tenders would favor large corporate interests, naming the Adani Group; these are his allegations.
  • The NagpurGoa Shaktipeeth Expressway is a proposed Rs 86,300 crore, 810 km corridor through 12 districts intended to cut travel time to about eight hours, which protesters say would destroy fertile farms and plantations.
