Sparkasse to Retire Kwitt on Aug. 25 as Wero Adoption Climbs Across Europe

EPI cites 1.8 million German registrations, with 43 million active users across France, Belgium and Germany.

Overview

  • Sparkasse will discontinue giropay | Kwitt on 25 August 2025 and instruct customers to use Wero for mobile peer‑to‑peer payments.
  • Wero supports instant account‑to‑account transfers via phone number or email without an IBAN once both parties’ banks and accounts are enabled.
  • ING is rolling out Wero to more than 10 million German customers in August, Revolut opened registrations in July, and Deutsche Bank plans a launch in the third quarter.
  • EPI links scale to customer migrations in France and Belgium, including users from Paylib and Payconiq, with early German uptake led by Sparkassen and Volksbanken.
  • A Verivox survey finds about 30% awareness in Germany, roughly 10% reporting registration and around 4% having used Wero, while online and in‑store payments are still slated to follow after peer‑to‑peer.
