Spaniards Abroad Reach 3.2 Million as Galicia’s Diaspora Hits 563,303

A surge of applicants under the 2022 nationality reform is swelling registers, with consulates still working through a heavy backlog.

  • The INE’s 1 January 2026 PERE update counts 3,202,002 Spanish nationals living overseas, a 5.1% year-over-year increase.
  • Four in five of 2025’s new registrations were for people born outside Spain, and 73.1% of all registrants were born abroad, with 60% residing in the Americas.
  • Galicia’s external roll grew by 15,051 in a year to 563,303—about one fifth of Galicians—with 431,511 born abroad and 131,792 born in the region.
  • Argentina remains the top country of residence for Galicians (191,552), followed by Brazil (53,542), Cuba (51,326), Uruguay (45,176) and the United States (29,774).
  • With only 47,075 under 16, Galicia’s diaspora is mostly adult, pointing to a potential near-20% share of voter rolls in the 2027–2028 elections; in Deza–Tabeirós–Montes, the roll reached 23,181 with men now 51.9%.
