Spain's Supreme Court Upholds 12- and 8-Year Sentences for Sex Crimes Against Minors in Vitoria-Gasteiz

The court found that a flaw in a pretrial testimony did not undermine the other proof.

Overview

  • The Supreme Court confirmed the Álava court’s convictions for corruption of minors and sexual abuse of two girls aged 13 and 15 in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
  • One defendant received a total of eight years for corruption of a minor and non-penetrative abuse of both girls, and he must pay 2,500 euros and 1,500 euros to the victims.
  • The second defendant must serve twelve years for corruption of a minor and penetrative abuse of one girl, and he owes 3,500 euros in compensation.
  • The ruling says the men took advantage of the girls’ dire family and economic situations and their drug dependence by paying for sex.
  • An appeal citing the absence of a defense lawyer during a victim’s earlier statement was only partly upheld, as other evidence supported the facts and the sentences remain in place.
