Spain’s Suicides Fall Again in 2024 as Youth Deaths Rise

Experts caution that the overall decline has not shifted the underlying risk profile.

Overview

  • INE confirms 3,953 suicides in 2024, 163 fewer than in 2023, marking a second consecutive annual drop after the 2022 peak.
  • Men accounted for 2,902 deaths versus 1,051 women, roughly 73% of the total.
  • People aged 65 and over recorded 1,162 deaths, nearly one-third of the total, with the highest proportional risk at very old ages.
  • Youth deaths increased to 210 under-25s, including 78 aged 15–19—an 18% annual rise—and 12 under 15.
  • Proportional risk is higher in small municipalities and most deaths occur in private settings, while authorities advance a funded national prevention plan and report heavy use of the 024 helpline.
