Spain’s Ports Start 2026 With Mixed Results as National Traffic Dips

Different cargo mixes explain the uneven results.

Overview

  • Puertos del Estado reported a 1.3% drop in total port traffic for January–February 2026 across Spain after a harsh winter, with ports also flagging risks from tensions near the Gulf of Oman. Port de Tarragona moved 5.11 million tonnes in the period, up 2.5%, led by a 21.2% jump in solid bulks and sharp rises in iron ore and fertilizers.
  • Vigo’s Bouzas terminal handled 56,554 cars in February to lead Spain by about 6,000 over Barcelona, reaching 95,758 vehicles for January–February, up 2.3%.
  • Vilagarcía moved just under 258,000 tonnes in the first two months, up 3.9%, and its port chief said they expect about 4% growth for the first quarter.
  • Marín’s traffic fell 26% as winter weather cut solid bulks by 52%, though exports rose 6% and ship calls increased 46% even as imports dropped 37%.
