Overview
- The National Statistics Institute’s quarterly release, published Thursday, reported Spain had 49,801,559 residents on July 1, 2026, an increase of 104,178 in Q2 and an estimated annual rise of 444,205 people.
- The growth is concentrated in people born abroad, whose total stands at 10,291,807 and now exceeds the stock of foreign nationals because many foreign-born residents have acquired Spanish nationality.
- Registered foreign nationals increased by 87,197 in the quarter to 7,437,543 while residents with Spanish nationality rose by 16,981, showing recent inflows are mostly among non-Spanish citizens and newly naturalised residents.
- Immigration flows in Q2 were concentrated by nationality, with 34,000 arrivals from Colombia, 23,300 from Venezuela and 21,100 from Morocco, while those same nationalities also recorded the largest emigration counts; Colombia had 11,500 departures, Morocco 10,900 and Venezuela 5,900.
- Population rose in every autonomous community, households increased to 19,874,860, and the shift in where people live—for example Galicia’s net gain of 15,033 residents driven by 19,430 more foreign residents—will raise demand for housing, local services and regional planning.
