Spain’s Medical Unions Call Indefinite National Strikes Starting Feb. 16

The walkouts seek a dedicated medical statute in response to sustained emergency room overcrowding.

Overview

  • Doctors’ unions including CESM, SMA, Metges de Catalunya, AMYTS, SME and O’MEGA will stage one-week stoppages monthly from February to June, with a united protest in Madrid on February 14.
  • The announced strike weeks are Feb 16–20, Mar 16–20, Apr 27–30, May 18–22 and Jun 15–19, targeting the Ministry’s draft Estatuto Marco and pressing for a specific Estatuto Médico.
  • Local pressures continue: La Paz in Madrid held a 24-hour emergency-department strike constrained by roughly 93% minimum service levels, as staff decried patients kept in corridors and unsafe ratios.
  • Hospital La Paz’s management cited seasonal respiratory viruses and reported 44 patients awaiting admission at midday on Monday, saying nursing and auxiliary staff had been reinforced.
  • In Albacete, unions report 7,694 ER patients from Jan 1–18 (over 427 daily), triage delays up to 45 minutes, shortages of staff and equipment, and dozens waiting more than 24 hours for beds.
