Spain’s February Road Deaths Near Record Low as Pedestrian and Cyclist Fatalities Rise

Rising mobility coincides with fewer overall fatalities, highlighting uneven gains for vulnerable road users.

Overview

  • Spain recorded 59 road deaths in February 2026, the second-lowest February on record, according to DGT data.
  • Year to date, fatalities stand at 129, down 27 from the same period in 2025, even as mobility increased by 1.77%.
  • Vulnerable users fared worse: 14 pedestrians died in February, five more than a year earlier, and four cyclists died, two more than in 2025.
  • Several areas reported zero interurban fatalities for the month, including País Vasco, La Rioja, Ceuta and Melilla.
  • Ourense finished January and February with no road deaths for the first time on record despite severe weather and protest-driven diversions, with one January case removed from statistics as a suspected suicide.
