Spain’s April Pension Bill Rises 6% To €14.34 Billion

The figures signal rising costs driven by later retirements.

Overview

  • Three quarters of the spending went to retirement benefits (€10,499.2 million), with the rest covering widowhood, disability, orphanhood and support for relatives.
  • The average retirement pension reached €1,368.4 a month, which more than two thirds of pensioners receive.
  • Delayed retirements increased in early 2026, with 12.7% of new retirees choosing to work longer compared with lower shares in 2025 and 2019.
  • A gender gap supplement was paid with 1.4 million pensions in April, adding €36.9 per child and going mostly to women, who received €76.92 on average.
