Spain’s 2025 Power Mix Reaches 55.5% Renewables as Solar Sets New Record

System leaders call for sustained investment with stronger interconnections to integrate variable generation securely.

Overview

  • Photovoltaic output rose 12.5% to 50.2 GWh and captured a record 18.4% of Spain’s electricity mix, Red Eléctrica’s 2025 report shows.
  • Total renewable generation increased 1.3% to 151 GWh for a 55.5% share, while coal halved to 0.6% after the Aboño II conversion in Asturias.
  • Spain added 10 GW of new capacity in 2025, nearly 9 GW from solar, exceeding 11 GW when self-consumption is included, with 9 GW of autoconsumption now installed.
  • Average wholesale power prices rose to €83.45/MWh due to higher gas costs, yet the market recorded more than 750 hours with negative prices.
  • Regional contrasts stood out as Catalunya ranked second in self-consumption output (2,588 GWh with 2,000 MW installed) while Galicia’s renewable generation fell 10.1% and combined-cycle output grew 21.1%.
