Overview
- Defence Minister Margarita Robles, who confirmed the swap Tuesday in parliament, set the handover from Cristóbal Colón to Méndez Núñez for April 7.
- The Méndez Núñez will provide air defense for the area, back up Spain’s Patriot missile unit in Turkey, and stand ready to help evacuate civilians if needed.
- The ship will integrate into France’s Charles de Gaulle carrier group that is protecting Cyprus and nearby Western facilities from possible Iranian missile reprisals.
- Compared with Cristóbal Colón, the Méndez Núñez carries an earlier version of the U.S.-made Aegis air and missile defense system but remains fully interoperable with NATO fleets.
- PP and Vox said the deployment should have prior parliamentary approval, and the government called it collective defense with the timeline set by decisions from the EU, France and Cyprus.
