Spain Maps 200 New Prosecutor Posts as Decree Process Begins

The plan, agreed with the state prosecutor’s office, aims to ease heavy caseloads in the biggest regions.

Overview

  • The Justice Ministry, which on Monday set out the regional split, opened the Royal Decree process to formally create 200 prosecutor posts.
  • More than half of the new roles go to Andalucía, Catalonia and Madrid, with 38, 35 and 32 posts respectively based on workload and current staffing.
  • Murcia sees the largest proportional rise with seven prosecutors, a 9.72% increase in its staff.
  • The expansion lifts the national prosecutor workforce from 2,804 to 3,004 and carries a first‑year cost of €22.5 million.
  • Central bodies gain 18 posts and regional adds include Valencia with 20, the Canary Islands with 8, Castilla‑La Mancha with 8, and Castilla y León and Galicia with 7 each.
