Spain Launches MamoRisk To Validate AI and Genomics Breast‑Cancer Risk Model

The national study will test whether combining genetic sequencing, AI analysis of mammograms, and clinical data can safely target screening and prevention

Overview

  • The study began recruiting this week, with organisers sending the first invitations to about 400 women in Galicia to join the MamoRisk cohort.
  • MamoRisk will enroll 10,000 women drawn from screening programmes in 14 autonomous communities, including 4,000 with prior breast cancer and 6,000 controls.
  • Researchers will collect clinical and lifestyle data, saliva for DNA sequencing that includes BRCA and other risk variants, and mammograms analysed by radiologists and AI before integrating results with the BOADICEA risk algorithm.
  • The project is led by IDIS, CNIO and IISGS, funded with €1.2 million from NextGenerationEU via ISCIII, and is expanding regional participation such as Castilla‑La Mancha coordinated from the Hospital Universitario de Toledo.
  • The model is still under validation and not yet for clinical use; if proven accurate and cost‑effective it could enable risk‑stratified screening, targeted follow‑up and preventive measures while raising ethical and data‑privacy issues to be addressed.
