Spain Issues Food-Safety Alert After Listeria Found in Packaged Cod

Authorities ordered targeted withdrawals to protect vulnerable groups because the bacterium can cause severe illness.

Overview

  • AESAN issued a national alert on Monday after AndalucĂa notified it through the SCIRI system of Listeria monocytogenes in a ready-to-eat cod product.
  • The affected item is Bacalao Natura in sunflower oil by La Mar de Tapas, sold in 130 g sliced tubs from lots beginning with 0532 that expire between July 10 and July 30.
  • AESAN has transmitted the alert to regional health authorities and instructed them to verify and carry out removal of the specified lots from retail channels.
  • Consumers who have the tubs are advised not to eat them, to avoid cross-contamination in the kitchen, and to seek medical care for symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea or fever; pregnant women were given a special warning.
  • There are no confirmed human cases linked to this product in the published reports and the alert highlights how ready-to-eat foods can pose higher risk to vulnerable people and trigger recalls and extra checks by regulators.
