Overview
- Spain, which tabled its proposal Tuesday at the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg, is seeking to suspend or end the EU–Israel Association Agreement over alleged violations of international law.
- The measure needs support from all 27 EU governments, a hurdle that blocked earlier Commission plans for targeted sanctions and a partial suspension.
- Ireland’s foreign minister Helen McEntee said she would press to halt the pact or at least its trade provisions and acknowledged ministers may not reach a decision today.
- Israel’s foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar publicly condemned Pedro Sánchez’s move and accused Spain of double standards.
- The pact sets the rules for EU–Israel trade and cooperation and includes a human-rights clause that allows suspension, and pressure to use it grew as more than 60 countries met Palestinian leaders in Brussels and an EU citizens’ petition passed 1 million signatures.
