Spain Dismantles Sinaloa-Linked Meth Network That Hid Drugs in Marble Shipments

Authorities say the multi-year probe uncovered a marble-import scheme moving meth from Mexico to Europe.

Overview

  • Nine suspects were detained in the second phase of Operation Saga, which police describe as the largest methamphetamine-trafficking structure detected in Europe.
  • Searches uncovered about €3 million hidden in a bunker at a marble company and netted the alleged coordinator who oversaw routes between Mexico and Dubai.
  • Three detainees have been remanded to custody, including a Sinaloa Cartel member found hiding in Madrid and a Spanish marble entrepreneur.
  • The investigation, led by Investigative Court No. 6 of Spain’s National Court with DEA support, followed a 1,800 kg meth seizure in May 2024 and later interceptions such as 40 kg in a statue bound for Tenerife and 38 kg of marijuana sent to Finland.
  • Mexico’s security chief said the FGR and UIF are probing marble-trade firms linked to the scheme, confirming Mexico did not conduct the arrests and is sharing information with Spain.
