Spain and Algeria Seal Diplomatic Reset, Pledge Deeper Energy Ties

Energy urgency is steering the reset toward more Algerian gas.

Overview

  • Spain’s foreign minister, José Manuel Albares, met President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Algiers on Thursday and both sides presented the reconciliation as complete, with plans to deepen energy cooperation and restart high‑level contacts.
  • Madrid said the 2002 friendship treaty is back in force after its 2022 suspension, though earlier reporting had still described the pact as suspended.
  • Algeria was Spain’s top gas supplier in 2025 at about 35% of imports, and Bloomberg reported the government and utility Naturgy are weighing an increase of more than 12% in Algerian deliveries.
  • Any quick gain would likely come through the Medgaz pipeline from Algeria to Spain, which can carry 32 million cubic meters a day and has recently run near 28 million, leaving limited spare capacity to tap first.
  • The reset comes as Iran‑related tensions have lifted energy prices and Italy is also seeking more Algerian gas, factors that could affect how fast Spain secures extra volumes.
