Spain Airport Strikes Pushed To Monday Ahead Of Easter Travel

Government minimum-service rules point to delays rather than mass cancellations.

Overview

  • Ground-handling walkouts by Groundforce and Menzies, which unions postponed Friday to Monday, March 30, remain on the table for the Easter week.
  • Labor groups say agreed pay rises were not fully applied, and they are keeping further actions between April 2 and 6 in reserve after some initial walkouts were suspended, including on Mallorca due to procedural issues.
  • Any stoppages would hit check-in, baggage handling, boarding and aircraft turnarounds at major hubs such as Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca and the Canary Islands, where AENA expects about 70,500 flights over Holy Week.
  • Spain’s legally required minimum service, reported at about 90 percent, makes a widespread shutdown unlikely, yet travelers should expect queues and delays, check flight status, arrive early and use EU air-passenger rights for care, rebooking or refunds when eligible.
  • Holiday pressure is already high, with German airports and roads seeing heavy traffic; ADAC warns of bottlenecks, and airports from Munich to Düsseldorf forecast elevated passenger numbers and advise extra time for security and parking.
