Spain Activates May Day Traffic Operation After Speed Crackdown Nets 78,000 Fines

The rollout signals a push to stiffen deterrence following a weeklong blitz that found 78,045 speeders.

Overview

  • Spain’s traffic agency has launched a special May Day operation for the long weekend, expecting about 6.04 million long‑distance trips and deploying patrols, air units, radars, drones and cameras.
  • The drive follows a speed campaign from April 13–19 that checked 1,256,540 vehicles at 3,537 control points and issued 78,045 fines, equal to 6.2% of drivers stopped.
  • Fifteen drivers were sent to court for going more than 80 km/h over the limit under Penal Code 379.1, including a 235 km/h case on the AP‑36 in Cuenca and a truck on the A‑67 in Cantabria clocked near 138 km/h with a positive cocaine test and non‑approved tyres.
  • To manage traffic, officials will add reversible lanes, suggest alternate routes through the center of the country, pause roadworks and apply time‑limited curbs on heavy trucks.
  • More than half of speeding cases were on motorways and expressways, and data from Galicia show radar‑caught speeding brought in about €20.4 million in 2025, highlighting the role of fixed and section cameras in enforcement.
