SpaceX Sets Sept. 22 for Starship’s First Orbital Attempt

A successful orbital insertion would let Starship deploy operational Starlink V3 satellites, marking the start of commercial flights.

  • SpaceX has targeted Sept. 22 for Flight 14 with a 75-minute launch window opening at 7:15 a.m. Central Time, and the mission aims to place the upper stage into a roughly 275 km orbit for about six circuits before a Pacific splashdown.
  • The flight will carry up to 26 production Starlink V3 satellites that SpaceX says would enter operational service if deployed successfully, a payload the company calls the rocket’s first revenue-generating cargo.
  • Engineers made hardware and software changes to the Super Heavy booster and altered Ship’s heat shield after analyzing data from Flight 13 and the recovered upper stage to reduce engine clogging and improve relight and reentry performance.
  • The launch remains conditioned on regulatory approvals and safety checks, including FAA launch license and FCC filings, plus an in-flight redundancy review that SpaceX will use to decide whether to perform the orbital insertion burn.
