SpaceX Set to Launch NROL-179 From Vandenberg

The mission advances the NRO’s move to many smaller, resilient satellites by using reusable Falcon 9 hardware to increase launch cadence.

Overview

  • A Falcon 9 is scheduled to lift off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in a 35-minute window opening early Friday morning, June 19, with a backup opportunity on June 20.
  • The launch will carry an undisclosed number of classified payloads that independent reporting says are likely Starshield-style government variants of Starlink but that neither the NRO nor SpaceX has publicly confirmed.
  • SpaceX will fly first stage booster B1103 for a third time and plans to return it to Landing Zone 4 at Vandenberg after stage separation.
  • The NRO says NROL-179 is part of its “proliferated architecture” to field hundreds of small satellites for faster revisit rates, more coverage, and fewer single points of failure, with GEOINT contributing electro-optical, radar, and relay elements.
  • West Coast communities may hear sonic booms and can watch a live webcast, and SpaceX is also targeting a separate Starlink launch from Vandenberg on Sunday, June 21, as reusable boosters speed up mission cadence.
