SpaceX Launches NROL-172 to Expand NRO’s Proliferated Reconnaissance Constellation

The flight extends a quiet shift to a larger, faster spy-satellite network built for resilience.

Overview

  • SpaceX’s Falcon 9 lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 10:13 p.m. EDT Monday with the classified NROL-172 payload for the National Reconnaissance Office, and the booster landed on the drone ship Of Course I Still Love You.
  • NROL-172 is the 13th launch in the NRO’s proliferated architecture, which replaces a few large satellites with many smaller craft in low Earth orbit to speed revisit and widen coverage.
  • The NRO says its geospatial directorate is adding electro‑optical, radar and relay satellites that use optical links to pass data between spacecraft.
  • The mission flew under the National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1 framework, reflecting growing use of frequent commercial launches enabled by reusable Falcon 9 rockets.
  • The NRO plans further launches through 2029 to keep building out the network, and SpaceX’s packed schedule this week includes a NASA space station cargo mission that was delayed 24 hours by poor Florida weather.
