SpaceX Falcon 9 Upper Stage Creates New Crater on Moon

Danuri’s before-and-after imagery confirms the impact and provides a rare, known-parameter case for scientists to test lunar impact and ejecta models.

  • The Falcon 9 upper stage struck the Moon on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at about 2:34 a.m. EDT near Einstein crater and impacted at roughly 5,400 mph according to mission trackers and SpaceX.
  • South Korea’s Danuri orbiter captured multiple before-and-after images that show a fresh crater and traces of ejecta and those photos have been shared publicly by KARI.
  • Ground-based observatories, including ESO’s Very Large Telescope and telescope teams in Spain, reported a brief plume and spectral lines such as sodium and lithium that match an artificial impact signature.
  • SpaceX and NASA say the collision was unintentional and resulted from long-term orbital changes driven by solar radiation pressure and EarthMoon–Sun gravity on a spent, 4,000 kg upper stage.
  • The event is renewing calls for better cislunar tracking and disposal rules because it exposed gaps in monitoring, created a scientific opportunity to refine impact models, and generated rapid spread of doctored videos that had to be debunked.
