South Station Commuter Rail Fare Gates Offline After Winter Storm

Keolis says a long-term fix is being developed to ensure the gates function in their exposed locations.

Overview

  • Keolis confirms the new fare gates have been out of service for about a week and were seen wrapped in plastic with no restoration timeline provided.
  • The Jan. 25–26 storm brought more than 20 inches of snow and bitter cold, with wind-driven snow reaching the concourse and affecting all gate banks.
  • Keolis and vendor Scheidt & Bachmann are assessing the weather impacts and formalizing a plan to restore reliable operation at South Station.
  • Conductors are continuing manual ticket checks on trains to and from South Station while the gates are offline.
  • The gates debuted in late December to curb fare evasion, drew complaints about glitches and congestion, and similar installations at Back Bay and Ruggles are planned for later in 2026.
