South Korea Marathon Runner Struck by Truck Dies in Hospital

Police will refer the octogenarian driver to prosecutors without detention under a fatal-traffic-injury charge.

Overview

  • City of Cheongju officials said the athlete in their 20s died at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday while receiving hospital treatment.
  • The collision happened around 10 a.m. on Nov. 10 in Okcheon County during a marathon event.
  • Only the second lane of the two-lane road was closed for the race, and the truck reportedly changed from the first lane into that lane at roughly 57 kilometers per hour.
  • The driver, in their 80s, told police they were looking at a traffic signal about 100 meters ahead and failed to notice the runner.
  • Investigators plan to reclassify the charge to fatal injury under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents and refer the case without detention.
