South Korea Launches Fanomenon, 11‑Day K‑Culture Festival for December 2027

Organizers say the state-backed industry partnership will boost inbound tourism, center fans in a new awards model, seeding a touring festival from 2028.

Overview

  • The Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange released the Fanomenon plan on Monday, July 27, 2026, scheduling an 11‑day festival for Dec. 2–12, 2027 to be split between the new Seoul Arena and Kintex in Goyang.
  • Major labels Hybe, SM, YG and JYP moved in April to form a joint venture to run programming while the government will handle logistics and support small K‑culture firms.
  • Fanomenon will center a fandom awards show that ranks top fandoms and awards a grand prize called 'Fandemonium' using data-based metrics that will be chosen through a public bidding process.
  • Organizers cite estimates from the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute that the event could draw about 520,000 paying visitors, including roughly 200,000 from abroad, and produce more than 1 trillion won in economic impact.
  • The plan lays out a three-part roadmap making the December awards annual in Korea, launching a touring Fanomenon Festival in May 2028 beginning in Los Angeles, and creating overseas K‑culture centers to expand Korea's cultural and tourism reach.
