Overview
- The Cabinet approved a partial revision and the Ministry of National Defense promulgated the extension on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 to keep the Special Act in force until Dec. 31, 2030.
- The law, first enacted in 2004 and previously extended in 2011, 2017 and 2020, supplies funding and legal tools for projects linked to the U.S. Forces Korea relocation to Camp Humphreys.
- Officials said the extension is needed to complete unfinished regional development in Pyeongtaek, finish moves of remaining facilities in Yongsan, and carry out environmental cleanup of returned U.S. sites.
- Jeong Cheol-jae, head of the USFK Base Relocation Project Office, called the extension an “important bridge” for bringing the relocation project to a successful conclusion and for returning land to the public.
- The change could speed redevelopment and land-sales that fund local projects, affect housing and infrastructure in Pyeongtaek and Seoul, and leave observers watching for cleanup milestones and revenue agreements tied to returned sites.
