South Korea Completes EMU-370 Core Tech for 370 kph Next-Gen High-Speed Train

The project now shifts to vehicle production in 2026 followed by years of testing before commercial rollout.

Overview

  • The transport ministry confirmed core technologies are finished, with a designed maximum speed of 407 kph and planned operating speed of 370 kph.
  • The R&D ran from April 2022 to December 2025 under the Korea Railroad Research Institute with seven partners, funded by 22.5 billion won including 18 billion won from the government.
  • Deliverables include a 560 kW high-efficiency traction motor, more than 10 percent running-resistance reduction, improved suspension and interior noise control, and new evaluation and safety standards.
  • The government plans to start building the first trains in 2026, begin test operations in 2030, and target commercialization after 2031.
  • If deployed as planned, EMU-370 would rank behind China’s CR450, which is testing at 400 kph for planned 2027 service, and Ukraine has discussed financing a proposed purchase of 20 Korean high-speed trains.
