South Holland Backs Hoek van Holland Landfall to Route Offshore Wind Power to Europoort

The regional advice positions Rotterdam as the preferred onshore hub for new North Sea wind power pending a cabinet decision next year.

Overview

  • The province recommends bringing cables ashore at Hoek van Holland, routing them under the Nieuwe Waterweg to Europoort and connecting to a new 380 kV high‑voltage station.
  • The advice was developed with municipalities and water boards and evaluates alternatives including Noordwijk, Wassenaar, Kijkduin, the Maasvlakte and the Haringvliet mouth.
  • Deputy Arne Weverling says the approach could turn the port into a national plug point for green electricity and hydrogen while reducing transport losses and protecting the living environment.
  • The national government is still reviewing coastal options, with a formal decision on new offshore wind connections expected by the end of next year.
  • The province expects space for major infrastructure in the built-up port area only after 2035 as industrial uses shift and potential Maasvlakte expansion is considered.
