South Goa Shipyard Blast Kills 2, Injures 4

A multi-agency probe is assessing conflicting initial accounts to determine what triggered the explosion.

Overview

  • Authorities said the blast occurred around 6–6:30 pm inside an under-repair vessel at Vijai Marine Services' yard in Rassai village.
  • Four injured workers suffered severe burns and are being treated at Goa Medical College after initial care in Margao, and one person was discharged.
  • Officials reported differing early explanations, citing a suspected cylinder blast, welding work in a room, or an electrical-panel explosion, with the cause yet to be confirmed.
  • A Disaster Management team along with police, fire services, the Anti Terrorism Squad and the Bomb Disposal Squad responded to secure the site and gather evidence.
  • The two deceased were daily-wage workers, and the company has not responded to requests for comment.
