South Africa’s Consumer Watchdog Opens Probe Into Nine Sanitary Pad Suppliers Over Chemical Findings

Regulators will review new laboratory evidence to decide on possible recalls under the Consumer Protection Act.

Overview

  • The investigation follows a University of the Free State study that detected endocrine‑disrupting chemicals in sanitary pads and panty liners.
  • Researchers reported bisphenols in all pads tested and most liners, parabens in most products, and phthalates in all liners and half of pads.
  • Named companies under review include suppliers of Kotex, Always, Stayfree, Lil‑Lets, Libresse, Flo, Comfitex, My Time and Anna Organi.
  • The NCC has asked suppliers to submit recent EDC testing or conduct new tests, with recall powers under section 60 to be considered after assessment.
  • Suppliers will be allowed to respond as the Commission tests compliance with sections 55 and 24 of the Act, and no recalls have been ordered at this stage.
