Sophie Adenot and Anil Menon To Replace ISS Communications Antenna During Scheduled Spacewalk

The EVA will restore a key high-speed Space-to-Ground antenna after engineers reviewed a CO₂ sensor anomaly from Menon’s Aug. 6 outing.

Overview

  • The spacewalk is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, with NASA coverage beginning at 7:00 a.m. EDT and the EVA expected to start around 8:35 a.m. EDT and last about six and a half hours.
  • Anil Menon will serve as EV1 wearing red suit stripes and Sophie Adenot will serve as EV2 without stripes while Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway assist from inside and operate the Canadarm2 robotic arm.
  • The pair will remove and replace a Space-to-Ground Antenna (SGANT) on the station’s Z1 truss, a critical unit that transmits high-speed data between the ISS and Mission Control in Houston.
  • NASA reviewed an unexpected carbon-dioxide sensor reading from Menon’s Aug. 6 EVA that returned to normal after suit removal, and engineers cleared the replacement EVA after that evaluation.
  • If the EVA proceeds as planned, Adenot will perform her first spacewalk and would become the first French woman to conduct an extravehicular activity; live feeds will be available on NASA+, ESA WebTV, YouTube and other platforms with times subject to change.
