Sony Launches Live TV on PS5 With 100+ Free Ad‑Supported Channels

Sony plans to monetize the PS5 audience with targeted connected‑TV advertising using its wider entertainment assets.

Overview

  • Live TV on PS5, which launched Monday, offers more than 100 free ad‑supported live channels plus a growing vault of on‑demand movies, TV shows, anime and specialty programming accessible from the PS5 Media tab.
  • The launch package includes partner channels from ABC News, Fox, NBCUniversal, ESPN, NASCAR, UFC, Lionsgate, Amazon MGM Studios and others, with two Crunchyroll‑created anime channels exclusive to the service.
  • Users can open the feature without downloading an app by signing into their PlayStation Account on PS5 and navigating to the Media tab, and they can control playback with the DualSense or the Media Remote.
  • Sony is operating ad delivery with connected‑TV platforms Publica and PubMatic to serve targeted ads to a large PS5 install base and says it will refresh channels and programming over time.
  • The move positions the PS5 as a new FAST (free ad‑supported streaming television) distribution surface and could give advertisers access to a hard‑to‑reach gaming audience while extending Sony’s studio and streaming assets; a Canadian rollout is planned with other regions under consideration.
