Solana and Google Cloud Launch Pay.sh for AI Agent API Payments

The move tests whether small, per-call stablecoin payments can make agent-to-API commerce practical.

Overview

  • Pay.sh, announced Tuesday by the Solana Foundation and Google Cloud, lets AI agents find APIs and pay per request with Solana stablecoins using a wallet as identity.
  • The service runs as a Google Cloud API proxy that verifies a wallet, enforces rate limits, routes the call, and settles usage in stablecoins with providers paid after reconciliation.
  • Supported services include Google Cloud tools such as Gemini, BigQuery, BigTable, Vertex AI, and Cloud Run, plus more than 50 community APIs like Helius, Alchemy, The Graph, Dune, and Nansen.
  • Payments follow open standards x402 and the Machine Payments Protocol, which formalize a “payment required” step so software can authorize and fund an API call on the fly.
  • The launch removes account setup and subscription steps for API access, though real uptake now depends on developer adoption, provider integrations at scale, and comfort with stablecoin flows.
