Soham Killer Ian Huntley Dies After HMP Frankland Workshop Assault

A criminal inquiry is under way with a file being prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service.

Overview

  • Durham Constabulary confirmed the 52-year-old died in hospital on 7 March following a 26 February attack at the maximum-security prison.
  • Huntley suffered severe head injuries in the workshop incident and had been on life support, which multiple outlets reported was withdrawn after brain tests indicated a vegetative state.
  • Police have not publicly identified a suspect, though several news reports have named convicted murderer Anthony Russell as the alleged assailant.
  • The Ministry of Justice expressed sympathy to the families of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, whose 2002 murders led to Huntley’s life sentence with a minimum 40-year term.
  • Huntley had previously been attacked in custody, including being scalded in 2005 and having his neck slashed in 2010.
