Overview
- The Social Security Administration announced July 1 that original Social Security cards issued to U.S. babies born between July 2 and December 31, 2026, will carry a limited‑edition Freedom 250 logo.
- The agency says the commemorative card will function identically to a standard Social Security card and will not change a child’s Social Security number.
- Cards will be produced and sent automatically through the long‑running Enumeration at Birth program at hospitals, birthing centers, or via licensed midwives with no added cost to families or taxpayers.
- SSA warned parents to beware of scammers and said it will never call, text, or email requesting payment to obtain a commemorative card, and replacement or duplicate cards issued after the enrollment window will not include the logo.
- The rollout is part of broader Freedom 250/America250 semiquincentennial activities and could reach millions, since the EAB program has issued newborn Social Security numbers since 1987 and about 3.5 million U.S. babies are born each year.
