SNCF Rolls Out Three-Digit Seat Numbers on TGV Inoui

SNCF says the unified labeling simplifies wayfinding to reduce seating errors.

Overview

  • After an overnight operation on December 13–14, the new three-digit seat labels are now in use across TGV Inoui services nationwide.
  • Roughly 320 trainsets and about 170,000 seats were renumbered, with around 400 staff and volunteers replacing stickers during the night.
  • Each seat now displays a three-digit code: the first digit reflects the carriage (or its last digit for two-digit car numbers) and the next two indicate the seat, increasing left to right from the entrance and continuing between lower and upper saloons.
  • Duplicate labels can still occur on double formations (for example, 258 can appear in car 2 and car 12), so travelers must check the full carriage number printed on their ticket.
  • The system aligns TGV Inoui with Ouigo and is also used on Lyria where applied, with early passenger feedback citing clearer labeling and easier orientation at stations such as Paris Gare de Lyon.
