Snapchat Limits Under-16 Spotlight and Profiles to Friends-Only

Rolled out starting Wednesday, Snapchat says the change will curb under-16 exposure to reduce unwanted contact.

Overview

  • Snapchat has begun a global rollout that gives users aged 13–15 dedicated profiles where Stories and Spotlight videos are visible only to mutually accepted friends.
  • The company says Spotlight content from under-16 accounts will no longer be distributed to non-friend audiences and that public engagement metrics such as favorite counts will be hidden for that group.
  • Snap formalized an age-tiered model that lets 16–17-year-olds opt into limited public sharing with extra safeguards while reserving full public features for users 18 and older.
  • Snap says it will use age-inference signals to reclassify accounts it believes belong to under-16s even if users self-report older ages, and it maintains protections that block stranger messages and warn teens about risky contacts.
  • Advocacy groups and earlier litigation continue to pressure the company because surveys report frequent unsafe experiences for teens and tests show age checks can be unreliable, leaving questions about how effective the new controls will be.
